Rome, Italy
Today was our very last day in Europe. It is about 11:30 pm here and we still have to finish packing, so this will probably be a quick post.
Yesterday we tied all of our loose ends in Rome and visited all the attractions we missed on the first few days. This meant going to the Trevi Fountain, Circus Maximus (where the chariot races were held) and the Vatican Museum, including the Sistine Chapel. We also visited a Cappuchin Crypt Museum which was decorated with the bones of Cappuchin friars. We had dinner at this little pasta cafe near the fountain and bought a few last souvenirs.
Today we were gone on a tour to Naples and Pompeii from 7 am until 10 pm or so. It was a bus tour with a 30 minute stop at a coral factory and a 2 hour waking tour of Pompeii included. The only thing we really enjoyed was the walking tour of Pompeii. The rest we didn’t really care about, but it was cheaper to do the tour this way than to just do Pompeii on our own.
Naples was really beautiful. It was like a summer day there for the few minutes we stopped the bus and got to walk around. Our tour guide was this great old man named Franco. He sang opera and was pretty funny. We got some good video of him that we’ll have to show when we get home.
We had planned to spend our last night having dinner at this fancy restaurant near our hotel, but everything was closed by the time we got back from the tour. The only thing open was McDonalds. So that made for a great last meal in Rome. . .
As we walked home from dinner, we could see all the Christmas market stalls closing up for the season. Today, the first Sunday of the new year, marked Epiphany and the close of the holiday season here – which made a fitting end to our night and our trip.
Our fight leaves at 11 am, our time, tomorrow and we should be arriving at the airport around 7:30 your time tomorrow night. We will call Josh’s mom once we land.
Thanks for reading and commenting on our travel blog. We really appreciate everyone keeping in touch and being a part of this great part of our lives. See you all very soon!
