Zanzibar, Tanzania
Arriving at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in Zanzibar was a bit jarring. We habe never seen any airport with quite so little infrastructure and control. There appears to be only one gate and just a handful of employees.
The resort we’re staying on is really pretty, but the drive in was long and arduous. The last 30-45 minutes of which was on a bump dirt road. I wish Iwould have taken some photos on the way in but I was feeling very car sick and couldn’t manage to do it.
The poverty on the way in was very visible. I’m not sure if this is the most impoverished place we’ve visited or if we just saw more of it because of our drive through the rural areas.
Our resort has a really nice pool and a beautiful beach (as long as the tide is in). The water is crystal clear. At low tide, people walk around the dunes and we saw lots of Masai men in their Traditional red checkered dress.
At one point I found a herd of cattle resting by he water. I asked a bar tender at the resort and he said sometimes the Masai herders will heed them to the beach to cool off in the water and take swim! It was delightful this to so as cows are one of my favorite animals.
We spent most of the day just relaxing at the hotel. The drinks are super fresh made with tons of fruit blended right in front of you. Eve all found a favorite drink called Capriosca - it’s like a mojito without mint, crisp citrusy and refreshing.
Tonight we dined ocean-side by lantern light on freshly caught lobster at Gerry’s - a little beach bar and grill right next to our hotel.
