London, United Kingdom
Hello everyone. It is with much regret that I write to you from the KFC located a few blocks from our hotel. This isn’t quite how we imagined our first night in London. . .
Our plane ride over wasn’t too bad, except that neither of us were able to sleep at all. We did make friends with this couple from Miami, though. The girl was also a 3L in law school and their travel schedule was similar to ours so we are planning to meet up later in the week for dinner. What was supposed to be a 10 hour flight only took about 6.5. This would have been great if we hadn’t already bought bus tickets from the airport to our hotel. Despite arriving before 7 am we still had to hangout at the airport until around 9 am. On a positive note, Josh bought a newspaper while we waited and the guy at the counter said `sign here, mate. Cheers.` It was great!
At this point we were both exhausted and what was supposed to be a bus was actually an overstuffed minivan. We already had headaches from the plane and were going on no sleep, so the hour and ten minute ride in a tiny van with funny smelling people was not ideal. We were both feeling really carsick when we got off and we still had about 30 more minutes to walk and another 20 minute underground (subway) ride.
Our hotel is TINY and disgusting. We knew it would be small and gross, but this was more than we expected. We can’t even keep our key when we go places, we have to check it at the front desk. The communal shower is next to our room and the toilet is all the way down stairs. There were…body…hairs all over our pillows and on our sheets. Also, The reason we’re at KFC is because we were supposed to have free wireless internet at the hotel, but apparently it was `broken, but will be fixed tomorrow` . . .well see about it. . .
Both of us were in pretty bad moods and my nose was bleeding from the dry air on the plane (I guess), but we sucked it up, turned in our key and went to this Christmas food market I had found before we left.
It was pretty big they had lots of Indian food, cheese (even donkey cheese????), wine, pastries and tons of other things. We walked through about 5 times before we made a decision. We got a spinach and feta strudel and a red cabbage and ricotta one, and a cup of mulled wine. The wine was good. . . the pastries weren’t quite what we were expecting, but weren’t terrible. We saved half for a late night snack.
At this point (it was only 1 pm) we were so tired that Josh’s blood shot eyes were making him look like a drug user and I was tripping off the escalator every time we got on and off the underground. We were also very grumpy, too. We decided to stop by Westminster Palace and take a few photos then head home for a nap.
This is the cardinal sin of jet lag, but we were either going to fall in front of a bus or push each other in front of one if we didn’t get some sleep. We planned to nap for 1 hour but when the alarm went off it was raining outside so we went back to sleep for 2 more hours. . . Oops. Also, we were so tired we forgot about the. . .body . . .hairs all in our bed and never went to ask for new sheets. I guess its a little late now, so I’m just trying not think about it. Josh seems unconcerned with this.
At least when we got up around 6 we were both feeling much better, so we walked around the neighborhood and ended up at KFC to write this post.
We’ll probably walk around a little more and then go back to the hotel and go to bed early. Tomorrow we`re taking a free 3 hour tour of the city and then maybe going to a museum. Goodnight for us!
Goodmorning for y’all!
Josh gives this day a C-.
