Budapest, Hungary
We’re calling this trip our European Christmas Part Duex. We were here (in Europe - not Budapest) this time six years ago and decided it would be fun to do another European Christmastime trip. The snow, the Christmas Markets, the tinsel covered cathedrals - we are ready for it.
Unfortunately, our first day in Budapest was less holiday cheer and more hazy chaos.
Our flight left Friday night from Charlotte to Munich around 6 pm. We both partook of the little purple pill (zzzquil) on the flight and got around 4 hours sleep. In Munich, we had a short layover before catching a 50 minute flight to our final destination - Budapest, Hungary.
We’re staying on the Buda side of Budapest, a short walk from the castle. Our room is facing the river and we have a gorgeous view of the parliament building (third largest parliament building in the world).
By the time, we finally got to the hotel, showered and settled in we realized it was 6 pm and we had gone the entire day without eating (breakfast on the first flight was subpar so we skipped it and we both slept through the snack served on the second one).
Being so hungary in Hungary provided us with the perfect excuse to walk around our new neighborhood. It got dark around 3:30-4:00 so everything was already lit with tastefully done Christmas lights.
We eventually settled for dinner at Pest-Buda - a restaurant inside the oldest hotel in the city. The atmosphere was incredible. Wonderful service, only a few tables and an accordion player in the corner playing soft Christmas music. Josh had a traditional Hungarian dish of Paprikash Chicken and a Transylvanian beer and I had a pizza with ham and a Hungarian white wine.
I really can’t say much more than that because jet lag kicked-in pretty hard and I was barely awake by the time dinner was over. Thankfully, we hadn’t walked too far from the hotel and it was straight to bed on our return.
